Credit Cards & Currency Exchange
Most shops, restaurants, and malls in Pattaya accept credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and sometimes American Express), though smaller hotels, local vendors, or specialty shops may charge a small surcharge (often 2%–5%).
In central Pattaya and on Walking Street you'll also find many currency exchange offices. They generally accept cash and major foreign currencies; acceptance of travelers’ cheques or credit cards depends on the branch.

Opening a Bank Account as a Foreigner
As of 2025, Thai banks follow strict Bank of Thailand (BOT) regulations to prevent scam and “mule” accounts. Foreigners can open a bank account only if they hold a valid long-term visa, such as a Non-Immigrant Visa (Business, Retirement, Marriage, or similar). Tourist and short-term visas are no longer accepted. Most banks also require a letter from Thai Immigration confirming your local address, along with your passport, visa documentation, and sometimes a work permit. Bank accounts are usually free of monthly fees, but an ATM or debit card typically costs around 200–400 Baht per year.

Currency & Cash Declaration Rules
When entering or leaving Thailand, travelers must declare large amounts of money according to customs rules.
- For foreign currency, any amount over USD 20,000 (or equivalent) must be declared.
- For Thai Baht, amounts over 50,000 Baht per person (or 450,000 Baht for travel to neighboring countries) must also be declared.
If you are carrying large sums, declare them upon arrival or departure to avoid penalties or confiscation.
